MECHANICSVILLE, Md. — The Mecca Sports Complex, a burgeoning hub for young athletes in Mechanicsville, Maryland, is sending four elite cheer teams to the Allstar World Championship in Orlando, Florida, to compete April 17-18. The teams, known as the Novas, Icons, Dark Angels and Midnight, have qualified for the competition after securing first-place finishes and a partial paid bid at the F&T Sweetheart Battle.
Billy Wockenfuss, the owner of Mecca Sports Complex, expressed pride in the teams’ achievements. This is the second cheer season for the complex. “We have some strong teams this year,” he said, noting the significant improvements made since last year’s competition. “This year has been a big growing season for us, a big maturity level-up for us.”
The teams, which range in age from 5 to 17, have been preparing rigorously for the championship. Each team practices three days a week, focusing on tumbling, stunting and perfecting their routines. “Our tumbling does showcase what the gym is built off of,” Wockenfuss, 36, said, highlighting the program’s emphasis on hands-on coaching.
To support their journey to Orlando, the Icons team is hosting a spaghetti fundraiser dinner on April 4 at the Patuxent Moose Lodge in Hollywood, Maryland. The event will feature a spaghetti dinner, a 50/50 raffle and gift basket raffles, with all proceeds going toward the team’s expenses.
Brandy Robinson, a parent of an Icons team member, emphasized the impact of the program on her child. “The Mecca Sports Complex Icons team has given our child not only the chance to grow in their athletic abilities, but also confidence, discipline and a strong sense of community,” she said.
The teams are also seeking sponsorships to help cover the costs of the competition, which include entry fees and practice space rental in Florida. Sponsors will have their business information featured on the Mecca website, social media and the athlete shirts.
As the teams prepare to compete on the stage, their goal is clear: to win. “We want to go for improvement, setting the bar a little bit more,” Wockenfuss said.
