WALDORF, Md. — The countdown is on for cookie lovers as Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) prepares to unveil a brand-new addition to the iconic Girl Scout Cookie lineup. The organization confirmed this week that a new flavor will be revealed on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2025, sparking excitement among troops, families and longtime supporters across Southern Maryland and beyond.

The announcement, shared widely on social media, teased that “something’s missing from the cookie lineup” and promised a sweet surprise. The reveal comes as part of the Girl Scout Cookie Program®, which has grown from a grassroots effort in 1917 to one of the most recognizable fundraising efforts in the country.

Girl Scout Cookie Lineup and What’s Next

The 2025 Girl Scout Cookie season has ended, wrapping up in early spring after running from January through April. That season closed with 12 active flavors: Thin Mints®, Caramel deLites®/Samoas®, Peanut Butter Patties®/Tagalongs®, Adventurefuls®, Lemonades®, Lemon-Ups®, Do-si-dos®, Trefoils®, Toffee-tastic® and Caramel Chocolate Chip.

With the close of the season also came the retirement of Girl Scout S’mores® and Toast-Yay!®, two varieties that had become local favorites. Their departure has left room for the debut of a brand-new cookie, which will officially join the lineup for the 2026 cookie season beginning in January.

More Than a Cookie

For more than a century, the Girl Scout Cookie Program® has represented more than just a treat. Since the first troop in Muskogee, Oklahoma, baked cookies in 1917, the program has helped girls build leadership, business and community engagement skills.

Every purchase supports local councils and troops, funding community service projects, troop activities and leadership opportunities. Nearly 700,000 Girl Scouts participate each year, and around 3,300 annually earn the Gold Award—the highest honor in Girl Scouting—by leading projects that address pressing community needs.

Local Excitement — and Big Guesses

In Southern Maryland, cookie season is a community tradition. Troops set up booths outside grocery stores, schools and community centers, while neighbors and coworkers eagerly stock up on their favorite cookies.

The mystery cookie has now become the talk of the season, with fans taking to social media to share their hopes and guesses. Some want to see old favorites make a comeback, like the Savannah Smiles lemon cookie or Snaps, a thin ginger cookie from the 1990s. Others are hoping this one won’t be as hard to find as the short-lived Raspberry Rally®, which quickly sold out during its limited release.

With anticipation building, many are wondering: Will the new cookie be fruity, chocolatey or a nostalgic throwback?
