NORTH BEACH, Md. — The North Beach Fire Department’s annual carnival has special meaning this year as the department marks its 100th year in operation.

The volunteer fire department recently announced on its website and social media pages that the “Century Carnival” will take place Tuesday, Aug. 18, through Saturday, Aug. 22. The carnival will take place at 8536 Bayside Road, Chesapeake Beach, at the fire station, starting at 6 p.m.

According to the department’s Facebook post, the event will feature rides, games, food and family fun, and plans to announce more details in the coming weeks.

The North Beach Fire Department officially marked its 100th year since its founding on Feb. 5 of this year. Thirty-nine members of the town agreed to create the volunteer fire department. Of those 39, 34 joined the department as active members and the other five joined as associate members. The department officially received its state charter later that year, on Aug. 4.

Originally, the department served a vast area covering much of the county, all the way down to Solomons Island. Over the years, towns split off to form their own departments. The North Beach department began ambulance services in the 1960s and moved into its current location in 1976. The department currently has more than 100 members.

To honor this milestone, the department is hosting or has participated in several events, including a historical talk at the Bayside Museum earlier this year. The Century Carnival promises to be a fun, community-focused event that will allow everyone in the town to celebrate the volunteer fire department’s history and contribution over these last 100 years.
