CHESAPEAKE BEACH, Md. — A North Beach man is facing a misdemeanor charge after Calvert County authorities say he posed as a law enforcement officer while attempting to contact a resident late last month.

According to charging documents filed in District Court, Michael Thomas Freeman, 65, was arrested at about 6:45 p.m. Oct. 27, 2025, after deputies were dispatched to a report of a suspicious person in Chesapeake Beach. A responding deputy found Freeman sitting in a Dodge Ram pickup and noted he was wearing a body-worn camera positioned in a manner consistent with police.

Before deputies arrived, the resident had interacted with Freeman at her door and questioned who he was. Ring doorbell footage reviewed by investigators allegedly showed Freeman identifying himself as being “with the Sheriff’s Department” while speaking to her, according to the deputy’s report.

When later interviewed by law enforcement, Freeman said he worked for a private business that serves court papers and was there to deliver a child-custody order. He displayed a badge reading “Maryland Process Server – M. Freeman” and a Maryland Courts identification card, the documents state. The encounter was also recorded on the deputy’s Axon body-worn camera.

Freeman is charged with impersonating a police officer under Maryland Public Safety § 3-502(b), which carries a maximum penalty of two years in jail and a $2,000 fine if convicted.

Court records show Freeman was initially held without bond after his arrest. At a bail review on Oct. 28, Judge Robyn Riddle set bail at $2,500 corporate, and Freeman was released the same day under conditions that include no contact with the complainant and a stay-away order from the residence.

A trial is scheduled for Jan. 7, 2026, at 1 p.m. in Calvert District Court in Prince Frederick.
