NORTH BEACH, Md. — The North Beach Volunteer Fire Department is celebrating a special milestone this year. Aug. 4 marks the department’s 100th year of incorporation.
As a part of the celebrations, all are invited to a lecture by Assistant Chief John Tippett at the Bayside Historical Museum on Sunday, March 22. The town and the fire department have not released any other planned events thus far.
North Beach VFD received its certificate of incorporation as a nonprofit organization on Aug. 4, 1926, for the purpose of protecting life and property in North Beach and the surrounding vicinity. According to the department’s website, the department worked as far south as Solomon’s Island in its early days.
After spending months operating out of a garage, the first fire station was built at Third Street and Dayton Avenue. The department purchased its first fire engine in the late 1920s and began ambulance services in the 1960s.
The department moved into its current station in August 1976, after the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners leased the land to them. The department currently has more than 100 members and operates two engines, two ambulances, a squad, a tower, a rescue boat, a fireboat and numerous support vehicles.
In addition to their work in North Beach, the department has often been praised for its dedicated team and for its support of nearby communities. The North Beach VFD was one of several that responded to the Chesapeake Beach apartment fire last November.
