North Point Cosmetology Service Salon

WALDORF, Md. – The North Point Cosmetology Service Salon is taking appointments from noon to 2:30 p.m. on Thursdays.

North Point students in the cosmetology Career and Technical Education (CTE) program, under the direction of instructors who are licensed cosmetologists, study to earn a Maryland State Board of Cosmetologist license. The license is one held by professional stylists and others in the cosmetology field allowing them to work in the industry.

In Maryland, a person must submit proof of completion of 1500 hours of training in a cosmetology school or 24 months as a registered apprentice in a licensed beauty salon to earn a cosmetology license. North Point cosmetology students who are juniors and seniors gain that training in the school’s salon. Open to the public, students are taking appointments for salon services — hair, nail and skin care, along with extension, texture and hair coloring services.

The salon will not book appointments after 1 p.m. to ensure services don’t conflict with dismissal. Appointments for services that will take more than 2-and-a-half hours should be booked as close to noon as possible. Estimated times for a service are listed on the appointment form.

Licensed cosmetologists and program instructors Aerika Doublin and Erin Glover will oversee students as they gain experience working in a salon setting and interact with customers.

“It is important that students get to work hands-on because it gives them real world experience and prepares them for the workforce. Working with diverse clients helps the students to feel confident and prepared in the industry on a professional level,” Glover said last year.  “It also familiarizes them with a variety of different people and personality types.”

Salon services will be done under the supervision of Doublin and Glover who will also pair the customer with a student who is best suited for the requested service. The North Point salon has been open for clients for about nine years with school staff, students and their families as customers, Glover said.

Customers can book an appointment online here. Customers who are not North Point students or staff must follow Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) visiting procedures and show photo identification before entering the building. Once inside, customers will sign in at the main office and be escorted to the cosmetology salon. Only clients who are receiving salon services are permitted in the school. The services can be paid for in cash or by credit card. Contact adoublin@ccboe.comeglover@ccboe.com or 301-753-1759, Ext. 255, with questions. The salon will be closed whenever the school is closed including holidays and inclement weather days.

In addition to the required training, a person must be at least 17 years old and have completed the ninth grade or received a GED to receive a cosmetology license in Maryland.
