Maryland congressmen Andy Harris and John Delaney

Hollywood, MD – Any update of the political scene this week begins with the money. The federal government shutdown, which began Saturday morning, Jan. 20, prompted cries nationwide that members of Congress, who failed to find a way to keep the government in operation, ought to forfeit their pay until the situation is fixed. In fact, there are lawmakers who have announced they are doing just that.

Two Maryland congressmen—Andy Harris [R – District 1] and John Delaney [District 6] are on the record that they won’t pocket any pay while the government is in shutdown mode. Harris’ decision was reported by the Baltimore Sun. Several news services have reprinted Delaney’s weekend Tweet. “I don’t think it’s right for me to be paid while my constituents are being furloughed and important services are being limited,” Delaney stated. “I will be donating to Mercy Health Clinic, a nonprofit community health clinic that serves the low-income.”

Delaney is not seeking re-election to Congress in 2018 but is instead planning to run for president in 2020.
