Lusby, MD – Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant in Lusby has resumed its generation of hundreds of megawatts of power. According to plant spokeswoman Lacey Dean, the facilityโs annual refueling outage, which began Feb. 16, was completed Sunday, March 15.
โWhile the unit was offline technicians replaced nearly one-third of the reactorโs fuel and performed thousands of inspections and preventative maintenance activities to keep the unit running safely and effectively for another two years,โ Dean stated. โMost of this work cannot be performed while the unit is online. About 1,500 additional workers joined the stationโs permanent workforce to support the outage. Many of these supplemental workers traveled to Southern Maryland from outside the area, providing a significant boost to the local economy at a time when tourism is traditionally down due to cold weather.โ
The Unit 1 Reactor is 40 years old while the second reactor has been in commercial operation for nearly 38 years. Combined the two pressurized water reactors are capable of generating 1,768 megawatts.
The plant is owned and operated by Exelon Corporation.
