(Waldorf, MD., May 31, 2017) – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (20-19) won game two on the road against the York Revolution (15-23) 11-1, led by three home runs on the day from their offense.
Southern Maryland jumped on York’s starter, Logan Williamson (1-3), scoring two runs in the first inning. The inning got rolling with a two-out walk to Cory Vaughn, with clean-up hitter Michael Snyder following with a two-run homerun. The offense exploded in the top of the third inning, putting up four more runs. Vaughn started everything once again, reaching on an error, and scoring on a Snyder single. After a Devon Rodriguez single put two runners aboard, Zach Cone launched his second homer of the season, putting the score at 6-0.
The scoring wasn’t done off Williamson yet, as Vaughn played a vital part in the fourth, picking up a RBI and scoring another run, giving starter Drew Hayes (2-1) an eight-run lead. Hayes coasted through his first three innings, before running into trouble in the bottom of the fourth. A walk followed back-to-back singles, loading the bases for the Revs in the inning, before Hayes was able to get Carlos Triunfel to line out, ending the threat.
Southern Maryland added another run in the top of the fifth inning, on a Patrick Palmeiro solo shot, his sixth home run of the season. Hayes worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the inning, before being lifted, turning the 9-0 lead to his bullpen.
The Blue Crabs threatened again in the top of the seventh inning, looking to score double-digit runs for just the fourth time this season. Three straight singles started the inning, loading the bases with nobody out in the inning. Revs’ reliever Manny Corpas worked out of the jam, striking out two of the next three batters, and stranding all three runners. Southern Maryland capitalized on another threat in the eighth, adding two more runs. Rodriguez led-off the inning with a single, advancing to third on two wild pitches to Cone. A walk to Cone, followed by a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with nobody out for the second inning in a row. A walk to Palmeiro scored Rodriguez before a 3-6-1 double play allowed Cone to cross the plate.
York was able to put up a run of their own in the bottom of the eighth when pinch-hitter Jared Mitchell connected for a homerun of his own. The Revs put two more runners on base in the inning, but reliever Britt Robertshaw escaped the inning with just the one earned a run.
The Revs were unable to create anything in the ninth inning off David Russo, as Southern Maryland walked away with an 11-1 win, their largest winning margin this season. The win improved the team to 20-19 on the season, as they hold steady at second in the Freedom Division.
The Blue Crabs return to action Thursday, June 1st for the finale of the three-game series against York. Southern Maryland will send RHP Brian Grening (2-1, 3.09) to the mound, looking to win their third series in a row. He will matchup with the Revolution’s RHP Steve Janas (1-3, 5.20), making his eighth start of the season for the Revs. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 P.M. on Thursday at PeoplesBank Park.
