Planning to go out this New Year’s Eve? So are Charles County Sheriff’s Officers! Sheriff Rex W. Coffey said officers will be conducting sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols this Friday looking for impaired drivers. “We conduct sobriety checkpoints all throughout the year, no matter the season,” said Sheriff Coffey.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the time between Thanksgiving and New Years tends to be the most dangerous for motorists. So, the Sheriff’s Office is taking the opportunity to emphasize the importance of being responsible and designating a sober driver. “We want people to celebrate the New Year but do so responsibly,” said Sheriff Coffey. “Otherwise, they might spend an evening with us.”
The Sheriff’s Office is also asking for help from the community. Anyone who sees a driver who may be impaired is asked to contact law enforcement immediately and provide as much information as possible about the vehicle including its make, model, color, tag number and direction of travel.
