St. Maryโs College of Maryland senior Jay Fleming, of Annapolis,ย won the Annual Student Art Exhibitโs Joseph Marion Gough, Jr. Excellence in Art Award for his photograph titled โOsprey.โย The award is given annually by a committee from the Leonardtown PNC Bank who, along with other local business leaders in the county, made up the jury for the student art show.ย The photograph, along with other works from the show, are on display through August at the bank.ย

Fleming was exposed to photography as a child by his father, Kevin Fleming, who covered the world for National Geographic magazine.ย Fleming won the Environmental Protection Agencyโs Grand Prize for National Geographicโs national wildlife of wetlands photography contest for a photograph he took when he was only 14-years-old.ย His love of nature and wildlife remains a theme in his work today.ย At the age of 21, he has had nine magazine covers and many other photographs in a variety of publications.ย Fleming will graduate from SMCM this weekend with a bachelor of artโs degree in economics.ย ย

The art award was named in memory of Joseph Marion Gough Jr.ย Gough was the president of PNCโs predecessor bank, First National Bank of St. Maryโs, and was a generous supporter of SMCM.
