LUSBY, Md. — A California, Maryland man is facing charges after deputies say he was driving erratically along Route 4 while impaired, with a young child inside the vehicle.
Tyrell Marquice Birdine, 25, of California, Md., was arrested on March 15, 2026, following a traffic stop in the area of northbound Route 4 near Flag Ponds Parkway.
According to authorities, a deputy observed a black Toyota sedan repeatedly swerving between lanes and unable to maintain its lane of travel. The vehicle crossed lane markings multiple times and was seen accelerating and braking erratically while traveling around 65 mph.
As the deputy attempted to catch up, the vehicle accelerated to speeds exceeding 90 mph before eventually slowing and pulling over near the south entrance of St. Leonard Road.
During the stop, the deputy observed Birdine attempting to move a young child from the front passenger seat to the back seat while the vehicle was still in motion. The child was later identified as a young passenger.
Investigators reported a strong odor of alcohol coming from Birdine, along with signs of impairment including bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and difficulty maintaining balance. Birdine told the deputy he had consumed alcohol prior to driving.
Field sobriety tests were conducted, during which Birdine showed multiple signs of impairment and had difficulty following instructions. A preliminary breath test later indicated a blood alcohol concentration of 0.15.
Authorities said Birdine became argumentative and uncooperative during the investigation, initially refusing commands to exit the vehicle and later resisting efforts to be secured in a patrol vehicle.
He was taken into custody and transported to the Prince Frederick Barrack for further testing, where a breath test showed a result of 0.125. He was then transported to the Calvert County Detention Center.
Birdine is charged with reckless endangerment. Additional traffic-related citations were issued in connection with the incident.
Court records show Birdine posted a $500 cash bond following an initial $5,000 bond setting. A hearing is set for April 20, 2026 in Calvert District Court.

Why are the commissioners and judges letting these individuals that are a danger out on the street pending their court dates? Hold them until court maybe that will let the charges and consequences sink in a bit. Stop arresting them and letting them back out to harm others.
