Thirty-seven second-grade students from the Chesapeake Public Charter School visited the St. Maryโ€™s River State Park for a day-long environmental field trip Thursday, May 3.ย

ย

High school students from the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center in Leonardtown and members of the St. Maryโ€™s River Watershed Association taught the second-grade students about the importance of a healthy watershed.

ย

ย โ€œThe field trip gives students the opportunity to experience nature first-hand and learn about the organisms that live in our streams and the surrounding watershed,โ€ said Lindsay Tempinson, St. Maryโ€™s River Watershed Association member.ย  โ€œItโ€™s wonderful to see students teaching students and sharing their knowledge and excitement for the environment with the younger generation.โ€ย

ย

The high school students taught the second-graders about the animals that live in and around local streams at several education stations, allowing them to see and touch animals such as fish, frogs, snakes, and aquatic insects that rely on healthy waters.ย  Students also walked along the park trail, as volunteer guides taught them about the surrounding trees and environment.ย
