SOUTHERN MARYLAND — The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for parts of Southern Maryland this afternoon as a storm capable of producing damaging wind gusts moves east through the region.
The warning is in effect until 7:00 p.m. Monday, Aug. 10, and includes northwestern St. Mary’s County, Calvert County, northeastern Charles County and southern Prince George’s County.
At 5:29 p.m., radar indicated a severe thunderstorm near Waldorf moving east at approximately 45 mph.
The primary threat is wind gusts up to 60 mph.
The National Weather Service warned that damaging winds could bring down trees and large branches, potentially blocking roadways and causing localized power outages. Unsecured outdoor objects could also become projectiles.
Communities in or near the warning area include Waldorf, La Plata, Prince Frederick, Chesapeake Beach, Lusby, Huntingtown, Hughesville, Golden Beach, Saint Leonard, Saint Charles, Brandywine, Accokeek, Calvert Cliffs and Chesapeake Ranch Estates.
Residents should remain alert as the storm moves across the area and be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions through the warning period.
