WASHINGTON (AP) — The National Weather Service in Sterling, Virginia, has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning effective until 6:45 p.m. EST, covering portions of the eastern District of Columbia and several counties in Maryland. Residents across the region are urged to remain vigilant as a strong cold front and an area of low pressure move through, bringing multiple rounds of storms.
As of 6:00 p.m., radar indicated severe thunderstorms extending from Bladensburg, Maryland, to southwest of Dunkirk, Maryland, and near the Wicomico River. These storms are advancing northeast at 50 mph, accompanied by wind gusts of up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail.
Hazards and Potential Impacts
The primary threats include damaging winds capable of toppling trees and large branches, posing a danger to people outdoors and potentially causing structural damage to homes and vehicles. Downed trees could obstruct roadways, and localized power outages are anticipated. Loose outdoor items may also become airborne.
Areas at Risk
Communities under the warning include:
- Anne Arundel County: Annapolis, Crofton, Riviera Beach, Mayo, and Shady Side
- Prince George’s County: Bowie, Clinton, College Park, Greenbelt, Largo, and Bladensburg
- Southern Maryland Counties: Leonardtown in St. Mary’s County, portions of Charles County, including Waldorf and Chesapeake Beach, Deale, and Chesapeake Ranch Estates in Calvert County
The first wave of thunderstorms is expected to continue moving through the metro area until approximately 6 p.m., with a secondary round expected to pass eastward by 9 p.m.
Safety Recommendations
Residents in the affected areas should seek shelter indoors, away from windows, and avoid travel if possible. Secure outdoor objects to prevent them from becoming projectiles in high winds.
