This past weekend McDaniel College hosted the seventh annual Maryland Crab Bowl sponsored by the Maryland National Guard and the Mid-Atlantic Sports Foundation. This is the last high school football game in the state of Maryland bringing the top talent from all over the state to play. Rising seniors try out for this event in the month of July at combines all over the state. This year Southern Maryland was well represented with 19 of the 55 man roster for Team Washington. The weekends events started with youth all-star games on Saturday followed by a banquet for the high school teams that had guest speaker LaMont Jordan ( former NFL and Univ. of MD Player) delivered a powerful message to the young men on the eve before their final game of there high school career.

The game was just as exciting with Team Washington coming out on top 31-21. Led by the steady play of Brandon Battle (North Point) who threw for two TD’s. Tyler Crounse ( Patuxent) who threw for a TD  and led a strong rushing attack behind the blocking of Tyrell Freeman (Leonardtown) and Barnabas Banning (Ryken). Kyle Goddard (Ryken) had one reception 45 yds. Jaime “Scottish Hammer” Gillan connected  on 4 extra points and 1 28 yd FG as time expired in the first half.
The defensive side of the ball was no slouch either. Defensive Ends Casey Bernard (Ryken) and Malachi Washington (Westlake) kept constant pressure on the QB all night. While linebackers Geoff Ricker (Patuxent) and Trey Lee (Thomas Stone) kept the Baltimore’s running game quiet most of the night with there usual hard nose play.
A huge thank you goes out to Tony Kennedy from the Mid-Atlantic Sports Foundation for putting on such a fantastic event.
