St. Mary’s College of Maryland—along with guests from the local community and beyond—celebrated the inauguration of its seventh president, Tuajuanda C. Jordan, on Saturday, Oct. 18.
During the installation ceremony, Chair of the Board of Trustees Gail Harmon charged the president to “support St. Mary’s College students in their growth toward lives of commitment and contribution to our society and the world” and to “face the challenges of the future, while upholding the fundamental values that underline this institution.”
In her inaugural address, entitled “Making the Invisible Visible,” President Jordan said, “I believe it is the perfect time and place for this excellent institution to transition from being invisible to visible in a profound way that extends beyond this corner of the world; thus, it is time for us to embrace our history, embody our ethos, and reaffirm and fulfill our mission. … We must be willing to let the world in, to see all of the excellence that is and will be St. Mary’s College of Maryland. … I can see the future and I am ready to take you there.”
The formal installation was preceded by a number of special greetings from guests, including St. Mary’s County Commissioners President Jack Russell, Delegate John Bohanan, Senator Roy Dyson, and Congressman Steny Hoyer. Guest speakers included Howard Hughes Medical Institute Vice President Emeritus Peter Bruns and University of Maryland Baltimore County President Freeman Hrabowski.
A community reception following the ceremony culminated the weekend festivities, which included a student-centered, community service event at the Campus Community Farm, two academic symposia and a formal luncheon.
Jordan was unanimously elected the seventh president of St. Mary’s College by the Board of Trustees in March 2014 and took office on July 1.
