LEONARDTOWN, Md. — The St. Mary’s County Commissioners approved a major infrastructure project Dec. 16 that will bring a new roundabout to a busy Lexington Park intersection, part of ongoing efforts to improve traffic flow and safety near Naval Air Station Patuxent River and surrounding communities.
During the final business meeting of the year, Dec. 16, 2025, the commissioners authorized a $1,471,392 construction award for the Pegg Road roundabout, a traffic circle planned near Westbury Boulevard. The action came as part of the Department of Public Works & Transportation’s agenda and reflects years of planning and community input on transportation needs in the county.
The HW-2101 Capital Improvement Project focuses on constructing a new roundabout at the intersection of Pegg Road and Westbury Boulevard to improve traffic safety and efficiency in the Lexington Park area. The project includes roadway realignment, drainage improvements, installation of curbing and sidewalks, updated signage and pavement markings, and necessary utility adjustments. Designed to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow, the roundabout is intended to enhance safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists while supporting continued growth and access in the surrounding community.
Commissioners said the Pegg Road roundabout initiative represents a significant investment in local infrastructure. County leaders noted that funding was included in the board’s capital improvement planning, reflecting priorities to support safe transportation and community growth as part of the broader St. Mary’s County Transportation Plan. Commissioner Michael Hewitt stated, “How pleased I am to see the million dollar savings on this.” You can listen to the commissioners meeting about the Pegg Road roundabout at one minute and forty-one seconds.
Work on the roundabout is expected to begin in early 2026 with a three-month span. In a recent Facebook post, drivers were advised to be mindful of construction activity and possible traffic pattern changes in the Lexington Park area as the project gets underway.

Let’s hope it’s big enough for trucks to actually around.
This is going to INCREASE traffic on Pegg Rd
How do you come to that conclusion?
Let’s just hope it’s large enough to handle the trucks seen on that road already

Don’t feel like Pegg rd ever has traffic like what they smoking. This is a waste of money.
I drive Pegg Road every weekday and have never seen more than 1 car sitting on Westbury. The funding for this could be much better spent
This doesn’t even make sense, there is zero congestion at this intersection. You want to decrease congestion, extend Pegg to Indian Bridge.
