LEONARDTOWN, Md. — The St. Mary’s County Commissioners recognized longtime Human Resources Director Catherine Pratson during their Feb. 3 meeting, honoring her retirement after nearly a decade of service to county government.

Commission President Randy Guy praised Pratson for her leadership and the lasting impact of her work, noting her role in strengthening employee programs, hiring practices and workplace health initiatives across the county.

“For those of you who don’t know Catherine, most must know her. She’s been the director of our HR department for many, many years,” Guy said. “She’s brought great programs forward, and for us a long way, in helping all of our employees and all of our hiring processes within the county.”

Guy highlighted Pratson’s influence on employee wellness efforts and benefits, saying her work helped improve overall quality of life for county employees.

“The numerous things that she’s done to really improve health, and everything else, has helped tremendously,” he said.

The commissioners formally commended Pratson for “nine years and 11 months of outstanding, praiseworthy and dedicated service,” expressing gratitude for her diligence and leadership and extending best wishes for her retirement.

“It’s sad, because I don’t like to see my good people leave,” Guy said. “But I know there’s a time when all of us have to retire.”

Pratson addressed the commissioners and attendees following the commendation, thanking colleagues and reflecting on her time with the county.

“This is a little bit more emotional than I expected, so thank you,” she said. “It’s just been a pleasure. The colleagues and the friends that I’ve had the opportunity to work with and collaborate with have meant so much, and I’m so proud of the work we’ve done.”

Guy emphasized that Pratson’s contributions extended far beyond day-to-day hiring responsibilities, pointing to systems and programs she helped establish.

“Just hiring people is unbelievable. The process that she put in place, and what we do every time we hire somebody,” he said. “The programs that were put in place for our citizens — I mean, actually, the workers in our county and in the schools, too.”

He also credited Pratson with helping support employee wellness and health initiatives, including the opening of the county health center.

“So it’s made a big difference, and we’re proud of what you’ve done for us,” Guy said. “And we’re going to miss her very much. She’ll be hard to replace.”

David Weiskopf, county administrator of St. Mary’s County, also spoke of his gratitude and the pleasure of learning from and working alongside Pratson, saying he would keep her contributions close to heart.

The commendation concluded with applause from commissioners and staff, marking the end of Pratson’s tenure and the beginning of her retirement.
