CALIFORNIA, Md. — Some dogs win you over with endless energy and playful antics. Others, like Jake, quietly work their way into your heart.

This week’s Pet of the Week from the St. Mary’s County Animal Adoption & Resource Center is Jake, a sweet and sensitive dog who is searching for a loving home where he can finally relax and feel safe.

Jake arrived at the center through no fault of his own after being surrendered due to unfortunate circumstances. According to staff, he previously lived with other dogs and was reported to be friendly with them. His history with children, cats and other small animals is unknown.

When Jake first arrived, he was understandably nervous and unsure of his new surroundings. Volunteers say he was too shy to take treats from their hands and quietly accepted having his leash put on before heading out for walks.

But with patience and kindness, Jake has slowly begun to open up.

One volunteer shared that after spending time together on peaceful walks and visits to the bonding room, Jake eventually offered a gentle side hug on his own — a moment so touching it brought tears to their eyes.

Today, Jake eagerly watches for familiar faces as they walk down the kennel corridor. He greets visitors with a wagging tail, makes direct eye contact and flashes what volunteers describe as the sweetest smile.

While Jake may not be the most outgoing or goofy dog at the center, his quiet affection leaves a lasting impression on everyone who meets him.

“He has a special way of making your heart smile,” one volunteer wrote in a recent Facebook post. “He is a sensitive, gentle soul.”

Unfortunately, the center environment is becoming increasingly stressful for Jake as the days pass. Staff members hope someone will step forward soon to provide either a foster home or, even better, a forever family.

Anyone interested in meeting Jake is encouraged to visit the center and spend some time getting to know him. Even a temporary foster placement could help provide the comfort and stability he needs while waiting for his permanent home.
