LEONARDTOWN, Md. — A familiar face in St. Mary’s County education is gaining national recognition, as Leonardtown Middle School Principal Dr. Deborah Dennie has been named a finalist for the 2026 National Principal of the Year Award.

Dennie, who has led Leonardtown Middle School for the past decade, is one of just three middle school principals across the country selected as finalists by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The prestigious award honors school leaders who demonstrate exceptional commitment to student success, school improvement, and educational leadership.

A Decade Of Leadership In Leonardtown

Over her 10 years at Leonardtown Middle School, Dennie has become known for fostering a supportive and student-focused environment while guiding both educators and students toward continued growth. Her leadership has helped shape the school into a strong academic and community-centered institution within St. Mary’s County Public Schools.

State education leaders say Dennie’s influence extends well beyond the classroom.

“Dr. Dennie is an outstanding school leader who cares deeply for her students, educators, and school community,” said Carey Wright, Maryland’s state superintendent of schools. “Her dedication and vision are a powerful example of what strong, student-centered leadership can achieve.”

Recognized At The State And National Level

Dennie’s recognition as a national finalist highlights not only her leadership at the school level, but also her role in advancing educational excellence across Maryland.

“Principal Dennie represents the level of excellence we strive for in school leadership across our state,” said Joshua L. Michael, State Board of Education president. “Her commitment to elevating teaching and learning, and dedication to mentoring and empowering educators, has strengthened her entire school community.”

National Award Announcement Ahead

The winner of the National Principal of the Year Award will be announced April 17 during the NASSP National Education Leadership Awards Gala in Washington, D.C.

As the Leonardtown community awaits the results, Dennie’s selection as a finalist already stands as a point of pride for St. Mary’s County — highlighting the impact of local educators on a national stage.

Most of the gala will be on Facebook and Instagram. The show starts around 6 p.m.
