CALIFORNIA, Md. — Southern Maryland is under a Heat Advisory today, Wednesday, July 30, as oppressive temperatures and humidity levels push the heat index to hazardous levels across the region.

The National Weather Service warns that areas including La Plata and Lexington Park could experience apparent temperatures of 105 degrees or higher, as the advisory remains in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The alert spans much of the Baltimore-Washington corridor, covering all of Southern Maryland and extending into northern and central Virginia.

Forecast models show maximum heat indices between 105–109 degrees throughout the advisory zone, with Westminster and Baltimore expected to see some of the most intense conditions.

Residents are urged to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, remain hydrated, and seek air-conditioned environments. The risk of heat exhaustion and stroke is elevated, particularly for outdoor workers, older adults, and children. Cooling centers have been activated throughout the region to provide relief.

The advisory is part of a broader multi-state heat event expected to last through the evening hours. Little cooling is expected until after sunset.
