CALLAWAY, Md. — Zachary Alan Kiger, a 36-year-old man with no fixed address, has been hit with a barrage of charges in St. Mary’s County, marking another chapter in an escalating saga of alleged property thefts, drug possession, and erratic behavior.

According to court records and law enforcement reports, Kiger is accused of committing a weeks-long string of crimes involving stolen vehicles, repeat retail thefts, and confessions made during traffic stops.

On May 23, deputies responded to El Coqui LLC in Callaway for a report of a stolen 2012 Toyota Corolla. Surveillance footage showed a man later identified as Kiger approaching the vehicle on foot in the early morning hours, entering the driver’s side, and driving off. The vehicle was later recovered at the Walmart on Miramar Way, where deputies found Kiger sitting in the driver’s seat. A spare key was located in the seat, along with drug paraphernalia and suspected crack cocaine in the door panel. He was arrested and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center, where he was held without bond.

But the Corolla incident was just one in a growing list of alleged crimes.

On April 7, 21, 26, and 30, Kiger was reportedly seen shoplifting from the Lowe’s in California, Maryland. Surveillance footage allegedly shows him taking high-value items including power tools, Carhartt hats, and faucets — totaling $1,835 across the four visits. He was observed using different vehicles, including a black Toyota Tacoma and a white Ford Windstar. Investigators linked him to the thefts through MVA photos and video surveillance. A warrant was issued due to his transient status and ongoing investigations.

On May 6, Kiger allegedly took items valued under $100 in a separate retail incident. By May 20, another round of theft-related allegations had been added to the case.

Meanwhile, on May 4, during a traffic stop at Liberty Street and Pegg Road in Lexington Park, Kiger was reportedly found with a metal smoking device containing suspected crack cocaine. He admitted to stealing a bicycle earlier that day to avoid walking home from Ridge. That bike had been reported stolen on June 10, 2024, by a man who had left it locked outside a convenience store. Deputies later recovered it, still with the chain lock intact, at the home of an individual who allowed its return.

During questioning, Kiger admitted to taking the bike out of necessity but denied owning the paraphernalia found nearby. He was subsequently charged with controlled dangerous substance (CDS) possession and possession of paraphernalia.

Kiger now faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including theft scheme between $1,500 and $25,000, motor vehicle theft, CDS possession not cannabis, rogue and vagabond, and several counts of theft under $1,500. He is scheduled to appear in St. Mary’s District Court throughout July.

In a previous April arrest reported by The BayNet, Kiger was allegedly found in Great Mills with a broken glass pipe containing cocaine residue.

Bond statuses vary across the multiple open cases, though he remains held without bond in the most recent incident. Judge James Tanavage presided over a bond review hearing on May 27.

If convicted of the felony charges alone, Kiger faces up to 15 years in prison and thousands of dollars in fines. Each CDS misdemeanor carries a maximum of one year in jail and fines of up to $5,000 for possession and $500 for paraphernalia.
