The Board of Education honored six students on Tuesday, April 5, for their accomplishments in academic achievement, career readiness and personal responsibility, which are the focus areas of the school system’s master plan.

Honored were Brianna Morris, fourth grade, Indian Head Elementary School; Hayley Tanner, fifth grade, Mt. Hope/ Nanjemoy Elementary School; Emma Morgan, fifth grade, J.C. Parks Elementary School; Mary Kate Cooper, fifth grade, William B. Wade Elementary School; Kathryn Newsome, eighth grade, Theodore Davis Middle School; and Victoria Munoz, senior, Westlake High School.

Morris was honored in the area of career readiness.ย  She is an outstanding student and has consistently earned grades to earn a spot on the school and principals honor roll.ย  Morris is a member of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) team and is part of the school chorus.ย  She has already set her future goals and aspired to study veterinary medicine after high school.

Tanner was honored in the area of academic achievement.ย  She has received straight Aโ€™s on her report card in all academic and special area classes and demonstrates personal responsibility.ย  Tanner serves as a role model for her peers and participates in extracurricular activities. She is a member of the school chorus and band, the Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) and math teams, the Just Say No Club and the safety patrol.

Morgan was honored in the area of academic achievement.ย  She is an enrichment student and scored in the top 10 percent of students taking the Maryland School Assessment in 2010 for reading and mathematics. Morgan is involved in school activities and extracurricular groups, and embodies the qualities of being positive, polite and prepared in everything she attempts and accomplishes. She demonstrates personal responsibility and is a role model for her classmates.ย

Cooper was honored in the area of personal responsibility.ย  She is reading at the high school level and is taking pre-algebra courses. She maintains excellent grades and serves as a role model for her classmates by accepting all challenges that come her way. Cooper excels at extracurricular activities and is a member of a local swim and soccer team.

Newsome was honored in the area of personal responsibility.ย  She is Davisโ€™ student government association (SGA) president and has demonstrated exceptional leadership.ย  Newsome earned all Aโ€™s and Bโ€™s on her report card this past semester. She models exceptional personal responsibility by helping others, demonstrating organizational skills, leadership and high scholastic achievement.

Munoz was honored in the area of career readiness.ย  She is planning on attending either Towson University or the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in the fall and wants to major in Art History.ย  Munoz wants to become a museum curator or a stage production manager and has taken most art classes available at Westlake. Munoz has also been a member of Westlakeโ€™s theater stage crew throughout her high school career.
