During the fall of 1992, the students in Michael Scanlanโ€™s acting class at LaSalle Academy in Providence, R.I., undertook an investigation to see how various cultures responded to the concepts of generosity and greed.

The class was divided into continents, and each group read extensively the folk stories, legends, and literature of the different cultures and select stories centered around these two concepts. The selections were assembled into the collection of folklore now known as the full-length play Give and Take. Each scene is dramatized in a manner that might reflect its unique culture.

Now, we ask you to join The Newtowne Players and experience the folklore and storytelling from cultures around the world brought to life on the stage at Three Notch Theatre. Inspired by the student creation of this play nearly 15 years ago, Director Stacey Park has assembled a talented team of students from St. Maryโ€™s and Calvert counties. โ€œTheir ages range from eight to 15 years, but their enthusiasm and talent is enormous,โ€ she said.

The Newtowne Players will perform Give and Take one weekend only, Feb. 11 to14, with five showings Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and matinees Saturday and Sunday at 3:30 p.m. All tickets are $10. Performances are held at Three Notch Theatre on 21744 South Coral Drive in Lexington Park. Light refreshments and beverages are also available for purchase at the theatre.

Reservations are recommended. Please make reservations for the show by calling 301-737-5447 or visiting www.newtowneplayers.org.
