Put Saturday, June 6 on your calendar and plan a family outing to Kings Christian Academy for a day of fast and furious youngsters vying to continue the tradition of sending someone from the area to race in the grand finale of the Soap Box Derby.

On that day, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., some of the fastest, most innovative racers will compete for the trophy. The event, sponsored this year, by the Third District Optimist Club is sure to be hotly contested in every age bracket.

The Third District Optimists are expecting a pretty good turn out, but Soap Box Derby race cars are in short supply. In order to get as many area children involved in the fun, the organization is requesting that anyone who has a car that is no longer raced, give them a call and they will come to you location and pick up the car so another child might participate in the exciting competition.

Donated Soap Box Derby Racers can help put a smile on the face of a young boy or girl in the community.

Southern Maryland Soap Box Derby is still in need of sponsorship support for our local champions to represent our community in Akron, Ohio at the All American Soap Box Derby World champions Race. Our local champions will get an opportunity to compete against racers from all over the country and from around the world.

The 2007 and 2008 World champions in the Masters Divisions are both from St Mary’s County. Sponsors will help keep this winning tradition going.
