Thomas Johnson Bridge Shut Down After Single-Vehicle Crash

SOLOMONS, Md. — The Thomas Johnson Bridge is shut down Thursday afternoon following a single-vehicle crash on the bridge.

The crash was reported at approximately 2:43 p.m. on July 9, 2026, on the Thomas Johnson Bridge between Calvert and St. Mary’s counties.

Emergency dispatch information indicated a white Ford Escape crashed into the side of the bridge. The vehicle was reported to be facing the wrong way, with airbags deployed and damage to the front of the vehicle.

Initial reports indicated the driver’s side of the vehicle was against the bridge barrier and the driver was trapped. Emergency crews requested two squads to the scene.

The female driver reported back and leg pain and told responders she became dizzy before the crash.

The bridge was reported closed closer to the St. Mary’s County side while emergency crews worked at the scene.

Solomons Volunteer Rescue Squad and law enforcement personnel responded to the crash.

Drivers should avoid the Thomas Johnson Bridge area and use alternate routes while the crash remains under investigation. Motorists can check live traffic cameras at thebaynet.com/traffic-cams.

Additional details, including the driver’s condition and when the bridge will reopen, were not immediately available.

Updates to follow.

  1. That bridge is hard to navigate. The day before a southbound black car crossed the centerline, sideswiping a northbound pickup. The car’s plate, and photos of it’s damage were reported to law enforcement. If the pickup driver reports the accident, talk with Calvert Co. Sheriff’s office. Stay safe out there.
