Just before 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, an electric transformer exploded and caught fire on a utility pole that is set back off the road near Route 235 and Exploration Drive.
The blazing fire charred the pole and threatened the surrounding woods and brush, because Bay District Volunteer Firefighters had to wait close to 30 minutes for SMECO personnel to respond and kill the power to the line.
Firefighters used equipment to determine the line was indeedย live, and at approximately 5 p.m. the flames were doused with water after the power was secured.
