Two Airlifted After Kitchen Fire In California, Md.; Woman Rescued from Burning Home

CALIFORNIA, Md. — Two people were airlifted to burn centers Wednesday evening after a kitchen fire broke out at a two-story home in the 21000 block of Bean Family Lane.

Firefighters responded at 6:58 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, to reports of a structure fire with an occupant trapped inside. Upon arrival, crews found smoke showing from the residence and confirmed that a female occupant was trapped inside. Firefighters quickly located and rescued the woman before requesting EMS to the back steps of the home.

The woman was flown by Maryland State Police Trooper 7, which landed nearby, to Washington Hospital Center for treatment. Emergency responders later requested a second MEDEVAC for a 44-year-old man, who was transported by ambulance to St. Mary’s Airport to meet Maryland State Police Trooper 2, which airlifted him to Washington Hospital Center.

The fire, which started in the kitchen, was knocked down as crews checked for extension. SMECO was called to the scene to secure power to the residence.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
