INDIAN HEAD, Md. — A two-story single-family home was destroyed by fire early Thursday, Jan. 29, in Indian Head, leaving one person displaced and sending two individuals to the hospital amid hazardous winter conditions, officials said.

The fire was reported at 3:59 a.m. at a residence in the 5400 block of Powerline Place. The occupant discovered the fire after noticing the smell of smoke inside the home and was burned on the hands while escaping, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal. The individual was transported by ambulance to a hospital for treatment.

Firefighters from the Tenth District Volunteer Fire Department responded to the one-alarm blaze with about 20 personnel. Crews faced significant challenges reaching the property due to heavy ice on roadways, forcing responders to rely on multiple brush trucks to access the scene. Fire control took approximately two hours.

The fire originated in the living room, officials said. The cause remains under investigation.

The structure sustained an estimated $250,000 in damage, with an additional $50,000 loss to contents. The house was completely destroyed.

One firefighter was also transported to a hospital after slipping on the icy conditions during the response.
