Right-Handed Pitcher Will Begin Season With Rochester Red Wings

The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs have announced the signing of right-handed starting pitcher Matthew โ€œVirgilโ€ Vasquez to a Minor League deal with the Minnesota Twins.ย 

Vasquez went 10-9 with a 4.44 ERA in 29 starts just a season ago.ย  His ERA was the second lowest on the team behind Nick Green who posted a 3.58 ERA.ย  Vasquez had the fourth highest number of strikeouts in the Atlantic League with 120 strikeouts in 2012.ย  Vasquez also suited up for the Blue Crabs in 2011 going 8-6 with a 4.25 ERA in 21 starts.

The California native made his major league debut on May 13, 2007 with the Detroit Tigers and would go on to also get major league time with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2009.ย  He was with the Rays Triple-A affiliate in Durham, NC in 2010, going 6-2 with a 4.88 ERA in 12 starts.ย  He was signed by the Angels during the winter of 2010, and was later released in Spring Training.ย 

The 2013 season will mark Vasquezโ€™s 11th season in professional baseball.ย  He will likely start the 2013 season with the Rochester Red Wings, the Triple-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins.
