If you’ve enjoyed viewing Maryland’s largest Veterans Day parade each year, why not be part of the behind the scenes team which makes the annual event go?

Volunteers are now being recruited for the 39th Annual Veterans Day Parade, to take place in the Town of Leonardtown on Tuesday, November 11, 2014. The parade steps off at 10 a.m. and concludes with a memorial wreath-laying ceremony in the Town Square.

Volunteers are needed for parade setup and tear down. Set up begins at 7 a.m. and tear down generally ends by 2 p.m.

Parking for volunteers is available in the Town public lots on Park Avenue and Courthouse Drive, as well as side streets and the lot behind Olde Towne Insurance on Washington Street.

Those interested in volunteering should check in with Maria Fleming or Laschelle McKay by 7 a.m. to be briefed and assigned to one of the following duties by personnel in Leonardtown:

• Closing off the streets into Town

• Manning road blocks

• Directing traffic

• Facilitating communication with shuttle drivers

• Manning satellite parking lots (directing parking and shuttles) at:

– St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds (for spectator parking)

– College of Southern Maryland (for spectator parking) 

– Leonardtown Middle School )for parade participant drop off)

• Escorting VIP’s

• Set up and tear down of tables, chairs and stage

• Other duties as assigned

Volunteer activities available from the Parade Coordinator:

• Directing traffic at St. Mary’s Ryken High School staging area

• Assisting with parade line up at Ryken High School

• Set up and tear down of signs

• Site Clean up

Volunteers should dress appropriately as all activities will be outdoors. For set up and tear down, work gloves are recommended but not necessary. Bottled water is generally provided and volunteers may bring their own food and drinks. Food and drink will also be available for purchase.
