LA PLATA, Md. โ Emergency crews responded to a critical head-on collision Saturday night at the intersection of Hawthorne Road and Ripley Park Drive that left multiple victims trapped and requiring extensive extrication efforts. One patient required CPR and was transported in trauma code status to Charles Regional Medical Center.
Emergency units were dispatched around 9:21 p.m. on October 18, 2025, for reports of a head-on collision with entrapment. According to dispatch, multiple callers reported hearing screaming at the scene and described one victim as “really bad off” with blood coming from the mouth.
Two callers reported entrapment at the scene. According to dispatch, one patient was reported unresponsive with unknown breathing status. Callers described severe damage to one vehicle with the lower half compressed.
Emergency crews arrived to find two vehicles involved in the head-on collision. Command was established at the scene with one patient confirmed trapped and designated Priority 4 upon initial assessment. Extrication operations were required to free the trapped victim.
A 30-year-old male required emergency helicopter transport and was initially prepared for airlift. However, according to dispatch, the patient went into trauma code status requiring CPR in the back of the ambulance. The helicopter was cancelled and the patient was transported by ground ambulance Priority 1 to Charles Regional Medical Center with a paramedic from another unit assisting.
A 20-year-old male was transported Priority 3 to Charles Regional Medical Center. A 23-year-old female was also transported Priority 3 to the hospital. All three patients required transport to the trauma center.
Extrication operations were completed around 9:41 p.m. According to dispatch, the landing zone had been established at the armory before the helicopter was cancelled due to the patient’s critical condition requiring immediate ground transport.
Maryland State Police requested a light tower at the scene to assist with the investigation. Command was terminated around 10:23 p.m. with units returning to service after scene operations concluded.
The cause of the head-on collision remains under investigation. The intersection was closed for several hours while emergency crews conducted extrication operations and investigators processed the scene.
