Willard Ellsworth Brann, Sr., aged 82, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2026, at his home in Mechanicsville, MD. He was born on November 4, 1943, in Kinsale, VA, to the late Wilmot and Margaret Brann.
On February 27, 1965, Willard wed the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Mary. Together, they were blessed with three children: Willard Brann, Jr. of Mechanicsville, MD, Russell Brann of Mechanicsville, MD, and Suzanne VerHaagh (Brian) of Mechanicsville, MD.
Throughout his life, Willard held various roles, including those of a fireman and a Metropolitan Police Officer. He was known for his resilience and strength, especially following a life-changing accident at the age of 29 that left him paralyzed. Despite this challenge, Willard remained determined and independent, learning to drive and often showing up in his handicap-equipped van to visit family, friends, and neighbors, always ready for a good conversation.
He took great pride in serving as the President of Baden Aquasco Little League and as a leader in both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, as well as being a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He spent many hours researching on the computer, playing the card game Rook, and video games with his family, and sharing stories with those around him. He loved the outdoors, especially fishing, groundhog hunting & his passion with the CB radio; his CB name was groundhog.
Willard was preceded by his parents and brother-in-law, Dudley Eads. He is survived by his beloved wife, children, brother Donnie Brann (Theda) of Kinsale, VA, and sisters Margaret Eads of Hardyville, VA, and Barbara Streett of Mechanicsville, MD. He was a proud grandfather to Christopher Brann (Amanda), Matthew Brann, Rachel Murray (Ryan), Tyler VerHaagh, Sydney VerHaagh, Rowan Brann, and Camden Brann, and a cherished great-grandfather to Kaysen Brann and Victor Murray.
He leaves behind a legacy of strength, humor, love, and perseverance. Willard will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
On Friday, May 29, 2026, the family will receive friends for the visitation from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, with the funeral service beginning at 4:00 pm. Interment will be private.
