Chesapeake Beach, MD – On Tuesday, Sept. 25 Chesapeake Beach Mayor Pat “Irish” Mahoney reported that a wreath with special significance is now on display in the town.ย
“There is a wreath displayed at Veteransโ Park that was on the grave of Senator John McCain,” Mahoney stated.ย “Gail Donovan Harkinโs daughter was presented with the wreath while attending a wedding at the Naval Academy this weekend.”ย
McCain, who died Aug. 25 a few days shy of his 82nd birthday after a very public fight with brain cancer, was buried at his alma mater, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. McCain’s burial site is on a hill overlooking the Severn River. The burial took place Sunday, Sept. 2 with McCain’s casket brought to the site by a horse-drawn caisson. The ceremony included a military flyover in honor of the Vietnam veteran who was a prisoner of war for five-and-a-half years.
Mahoney is urging town residents and town visitors to stop by veterans park to see the wreath. “Thank you Ms. Harkins for sharing this beautiful wreath with our town,” the mayor stated.
