NEWBURG, Md. — Emergency crews worked for more than 30 minutes early Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2025, to free a woman in her 20s trapped in her vehicle after a head-on collision with a tractor-trailer on the Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge.

The crash was reported just before 2 a.m. on U.S. Route 301. Dispatchers and Maryland Transportation Authority Police said preliminary reports indicated the SUV was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes when it collided head-on with the tractor-trailer near the middle of the bridge.

Rescue workers initially requested a medevac helicopter, but state officials advised that weather conditions prevented aircraft from flying. Firefighters then began a complex ground extrication that lasted more than 30 minutes as the woman’s condition worsened from alert to semi-unresponsive.

She was stabilized at the scene with a backboard and cervical collar before being taken by ambulance to Mary Washington Hospital in Virginia. Her condition was not immediately released.

The tractor-trailer driver was uninjured. Southbound traffic was shut down for hours as emergency crews worked the scene.

MDTA Police are investigating. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact the MDTA Police at 301-259-4445.

  1. North & south bound divided by a median…red reflectors that alert you that you’re going the wrong way…my condolences to the truck driver.

  2. Wild guess she pulled out of Sheetz and traveled about 2 miles to the base of the bridge and didnt realize what she did..
    Praying she makes it,,

  3. Like a good neighbor the Navy at Dahlgren can be counted on to respond to crisis events off the base.
