MECHANICSVILLE, Md. — A house fire sparked by a candle left a 13-year-old girl with severe burns Monday evening in Mechanicsville, prompting a swift response from fire and emergency personnel.
At approximately 8:05 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 23, 2024, firefighters were dispatched to the area of Three Notch Road and Leeland Road after a 911 caller reported that a candle had set a bedroom ablaze. The caller stated that the fire was “big” and that a young girl had sustained burns when the candle ignited her room.
Upon arrival, crews observed smoke billowing from the front door of the home. Firefighters quickly advanced a hose line to the affected room, which was engulfed in flames. The fire was contained to the single room and extinguished swiftly. Crews conducted thorough checks to ensure the blaze had not spread further within the home.
EMS evaluated the girl at the scene and determined that her burn injuries warranted immediate specialized care. A MEDEVAC was requested, and firefighters established a landing zone at John V. Baggett Park at Laurel Grove for Maryland State Police, Trooper 7. The patient was airlifted to Children’s National Hospital for treatment.
No other injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
Fire officials remind residents to exercise caution when using candles and to ensure they are never left unattended.
