MECHANICSVILLE, Md. — A 9-year-old girl was airlifted to a Washington, D.C.-area hospital Monday afternoon after being seriously injured in a sledding accident in St. Mary’s County.
Emergency responders were dispatched at approximately 3:50 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26, 2026, to the area of Budds Creek Road near Aviation Yacht Club Road for reports of a pediatric patient who was unconscious after a sledding accident.
Due to the reported severity of the injuries, a medical helicopter was requested. Maryland State Police Trooper 7 was pre-launched and responded as crews from multiple agencies arrived on scene, including engine, tanker, utility, advanced life support, and supervisory units.
A landing zone was established in the roadway at the intersection of Budds Creek Road and Thompsons Corner, temporarily closing the area to traffic while the helicopter landed. The child was flown to Children’s National Hospital for treatment.
Officials said the incident occurred as snow and ice from the weekend storm remained across parts of Southern Maryland, creating dangerous conditions during outdoor winter activities.
Safety reminders following snowstorms include:
- Sledding away from roads, trees, and fixed objects
- Avoiding icy or hard-packed snow
- Supervising children at all times
- Stopping activities before dusk to maintain visibility
Emergency officials urged residents to use caution as winter weather conditions continue to impact the region.
