ANNAPOLIS, Md. — A judge declared a mistrial Wednesday, February 26, 2025, in the case of Charles Robert Smith, a Maryland man accused of killing three people and wounding three others during a neighborhood dispute over parking in 2023.
Anne Arundel County Circuit Judge J. Michael Wachs ruled that the trial had been compromised after concerns were raised over the prosecution’s handling of evidence. The defense accused prosecutors of improperly introducing material that could have prejudiced the jury.
Smith, 45, faces charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and assault in connection with the June 11, 2023, shooting that left 55-year-old Nicholas Mireles, his son Mario Mireles, 27, and their friend Christian Segovia, 24, dead. The shooting erupted after Smith’s mother complained about vehicles blocking their driveway while a party took place nearby, according to court records.
The prosecution previously sought hate crime enhancements, arguing that the victims—who were Latino—were targeted based on race. Defense attorneys countered by claiming Smith acted in self-defense after feeling threatened by an alleged gang connection involving one of the victims, an assertion the FBI has not publicly confirmed.
Smith remains in custody without bond, and a retrial is expected, though court officials indicated it may not begin until 2026. Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess vowed to continue pursuing justice for the victims and their families.
Family members of the victims expressed frustration and disappointment outside the courthouse, calling for a swift retrial. “We’ve waited almost two years for this, and now we have to start all over,” said one relative.
The case drew widespread attention due to the mass shooting’s origins in what began as a minor neighborhood conflict. Prosecutors are expected to refile charges, but the timeline for the next trial remains unclear.
