PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Dr. Marcus Newsome has been appointed the new permanent superintendent of Calvert County Public Schools.
Dr. Newsome was brought into the district as the interim superintendent in Aug. 2025, following Dr. Andraè Townsel’s resignation. Dr. Newsome originally planned to stay on until a new permanent superintendent was appointed and to help the Board of Education (BOE) with that process. His permanent appointment was confirmed at the Feb. 12 BOE meeting.
Dr. Newsome has over two decades of experience in public education. He began his career as an art and mathematics teacher in the District of Columbia Public Schools and has served as the superintendent in three school districts, two of which are nationally recognized for their academic excellence. Dr. Newsome earned a doctorate degree in Christian education from the International Seminary in Plymouth, Florida, and a doctorate degree in educational leadership from Bowie State University in Maryland.
“His leadership is defined by integrity, collaboration and an unwavering commitment to student success,” BOE President Jana Smith-Post said during the meeting. “Throughout our process it was clear that Dr. Newsome not only possesses the professional experience we’re seeking, but also a deep belief in the power of public education to transform lives.”
Dr. Newsome was approved with a 4-0 vote by the board and will begin work as the new superintendent immediately.
“We have tremendous leaders and teachers and staff here,” Dr. Newsome said in his remarks following the appointment. “I’m ready to roll my sleeves up and work with this wonderful team we have here, face our challenges head on and do everything necessary to provide the education the children of Calvert County deserve.”
