Lusby, MD โ€” Operators removed Calvert Cliffsโ€™ Unit 1 from service early Monday morning for a planned refueling and maintenance outage. Unit 2 remained at full power.

During the outage, workers replaced about one-third of the reactorโ€™s fuel and perform maintenance activities, tests and safety inspections on a variety of plant components and systems. Many of the activities performed during the outage could not be accomplished while the unit was online.

โ€œScheduled refueling outages allow us to update equipment, ensuring the plant uses the most up-to-date technology,โ€ said Site Vice President George Gellrich. โ€œTo complete this important work, more than 1,500 additional nuclear professionals will be on-site, providing a crucial boost to the local economy during the winter season.โ€
