Solomons, MD –
ย Solomons Harbor was the scene of a high noon showdown Sunday, Sept. 18. The crews of several of the Mid-Atlantic Regionโ€™s workboats and charter boats vied for cash prizes and trophies in the harborโ€™s annual boat-docking contest.

The occasion was the 15xth annual Calvert County Watermenโ€™s Festival, which was held at Watermenโ€™s Wharf. The spectators packed two sections of bleachers, lunched on hot dogs and seafood, drank beer, scrambled to catch event T-shirts that were tossed their way while they marveled at the speed skill and accuracy of the working watermen.

The Calvert County Watermenโ€™s Association (CCWA) was founded 41 years ago with a goal to improve water quality as a way to ensure the future harvest of seafood from the local waterways. Its members are commercial watermen.

The group frequently lobbies the Maryland General Assembly on behalf of local seafood harvesters. They also support efforts to compel markets and restaurants to accurately label seafood so consumers will know if they are really eating a Maryland crab, fish, oyster etc.
