EDGEWATER, Md. — No matter where you live, Maryland has plenty of great bakeries to choose from. Each county has independently owned small businesses with unique menus that celebrate creativity and cater to different tastes.

In Anne Arundel County, Black Market Bakers (BMB) has stepped in to bring fresh pastries, breakfast and coffee to residents up and down the county. Black Market Bakers began with a food truck in 2020 and has expanded to four locations across the county plus its food truck.

BMB has fast become a local favorite due to its quality items, fresh breads and dedicated service. The bakery is also known for its commitment to safe gluten-free products and has a detailed outline of its gluten-free processes on its website.

Plus, what makes BMB special is the seasonal, ever-changing menu — and the fact that its pastries are huge. Seriously, if you want a cinnamon roll the size of your head smothered in icing, you absolutely have to try this place out. From fresh fruit tarts and danishes to homemade Pop-Tarts to breakfast sandwiches served on bread you smelled in the oven just minutes before, BMB makes the bakery experience engaging and fun.

BMB has stores in Edgewater, Port Annapolis, West Street Annapolis and Churchton, and a food truck in Severna Park. We stopped by the store in Edgewater, the closest store to our friends in Southern Maryland, for some morning pastries and coffee. Here’s what you can expect to find when you go.

Location Of Black Market Bakers

BMB Edgewater is located at 155 Mitchell’s Chance Road. The bakery is in Mitchell’s Chance Shopping Center, which has plenty of other shops to help you make a morning (or an afternoon) out of your visit. In addition to the bakery, you can visit other stores in the area like Always Ice Cream and Wyrd Bookstore.

The bakery has inside and outside seating. The tables outside are larger and better for big groups, and there are umbrellas on each table to offer shade on hot days. There are some limited inside tables, so during peak busy times, this may not be the best spot to hunker down with your laptop.

BMB Edgewater is open 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday and is closed on Tuesdays.

Coffee And Pastries

All BMB locations have regular and decaf drip coffee, as well as espresso drinks like lattes and cappuccinos. Drinks can be served hot or iced, and guests have a choice of milks.

The pastry menu is a little different. BMB maintains a classic pastry list with perennial favorites like muffins, chocolate croissants and cookies. The rest of the menu changes each week to accommodate seasonal fruits and the owner’s creativity.

When we visited, we were treated to raspberry and blueberry scones, cherry danishes and homemade cinnamon and brown sugar Pop-Tarts.

No matter who you are and what you like, you won’t have a problem finding something to eat at Black Market Bakers. You’re more likely going to have a hard time choosing between all the delicious options. You can follow the bakery on social media to see each week’s menu.

Breads And Sandwiches

In addition to pastries, BMB makes homemade bread that you can buy by the loaf or select for your breakfast sandwich. The bakery makes toasts and breakfast and lunch sandwiches served on its freshly baked breads. Customer favorites include the El Blanco breakfast sandwich and the ham and Gruyere sandwich. But really, you’re probably going to love whatever you pick out.

The bakery does sell out of certain bread options, so like most bakeries, getting there early means you have a better chance of getting what you want.

One thing to note about BMB is that it doesn’t have a phone, and there’s no option to preorder food for delivery or pickup. This is intentional; its website says it wants all team members in its store to have the ability to be present with the customers.

However, you can fill out its online form to place a catering order or place an order in the store.

Follow Black Market Bakers on Facebook and Instagram for weekly menus and updates.
