WALDORF, MD – The Southern Maryland Blue Crab’s hosted a dinner banquet to introduce their new manager Stan Cliburn. Cliburn has been a minor league manager for 42 years, and has compiled 1,482 career wins. Cliburn emphasized the point of manager interaction with every aspect of the organization was key to an origination’s success.

After Cliburn’s introduction, the Blue Crabs brought out guest speaker ESPN journalist Tim Kurkijan to have a speech. Kurkijan came out and told stories about his time with the major leagues, featuring players such as Brooks Robinson, Cal Ripken, Omar Vizquel, George Brett, and Pete Rose. He discussed how important athletics is for our youth, and how multiple sports are better than one. His one quote that rang out the entire speech was “Baseball is the hardest game to play. No question about it”. He fielded questions from the audience, and he was asked about several things regarding the majors, such as what he thought about the DH rule in the American League. He was at the podium for a god hour and a half, and never bottomed out on the topic of baseball.

On opening day, the Blue Crabs will change their name to the Hermit Crabs. They will wear special jerseys that will be auctioned off at the end of the game to raise money for the Hermit Crab Association. The first 1000 fans through the gate will get plastic hermit crab figurines to commerate the native hermit crab. Opening day is April 24 and the Hermit Crabs will play the Somerset Pirates at 7:00.
