Boaters, Dog Rescued After Vessel Runs Aground On Patuxent River

DUNKIRK, Md. — Two boaters and a dog were safely rescued Thursday evening, April 24, 2025, after their vessel ran aground on the Patuxent River.

Crews from the Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched around 7:50 p.m., with Engine 52, Boat 5A, Chief 5A, and Chief 5B responding. Rescue Boat 6 from the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department, already on the river for a training exercise, joined the effort.

Fire officials said responders located the stranded vessel and coordinated a successful rescue, returning all occupants to shore without injury. Chief 5B was in command of the incident.

With the start of boating season, authorities urged boaters to check safety equipment, carry a working radio or phone, and plan trips carefully, noting that accidents can happen quickly, especially near dusk.
