The Advisory Board for The Academy of Finance at Chopticon High School is seeking resources, time, expertise, and support from the local business community.ย
Local business and community partners serve as members of the Board to guide Chopticonโs Academy of Finance. The Advisory Board is critical to provide feedback related to the curriculum as well as to provide guest speakers, extended classroom experiences, and opportunities for internships. A major event sponsored by the Board is Job Shadowing Day when students see first-hand many careers available to them. Over 20 local business and community members joined the Board and meet monthly to support the Academy of Finance.ย ย
The current Advisory Board consists of the following elected officers: Gene Townsend, chairperson (GT Financial); Quincy Williams, vice chairperson (First County Mortgage); Sharon Woodside, secretary (Murray, Wamsley & Schrader); and Saida Taylor, treasurer, (Booz Allen Hamilton).ย
The Academy of Finance gives students opportunities, support, and encouragement to graduate from high school and prepare for college or a career. A few of the courses students will study include: Advanced Finance, Strategies for Success, Accounting, Business Ethics, Economics, and six credit hours of college-level finance/business courses. Students will also participate in a paid internship after their junior year.ย
If you are a business or community member interested in joining the Advisory Board, hosting an intern, or offering suggestions for student finance and business activities, please contact Gene Townsend, chairperson, at 301-997-0452 or email townsendgw@earthlink.net.ย
