St. Leonard, MD– Celebrate American Indian Heritage Day at Jefferson Park and Museum on November 7, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. This is a free educational event with activities for the entire family.
Attendees will learn about pre-colonial American Indian culture in the eastern region through archaeological interpretations, exhibits in pottery, stone tool making, basketry and archery. There will also be demonstrations of essential life skills, such as tanning hides by hand and flintknapping. This event will be held in and around the recreated Indian Village, with four traditional bark-and-pole lodges, racks for smoking meat and fish, a log canoe, and areas for pottery and stone tools.
A variety of performances will highlight the days activities. Native American Storyteller, Debra Henry will be back to amaze the crowds. Enjoy the majestic sounds of American Indian flute music performed by Recording Artist Eagle Warrior of the Eastern Lenape Indian Nation. Ancestral Knowledge will conduct a hands-on demonstration relating to making fire by friction in traditional ways.
Vendors will be on hand selling a variety of merchandise from educational toys and literature to handmade native crafts. Food and beverage will also be available for purchase. This event celebrates and honors the contributions American Indians have made, and continue to make, to the social and cultural fabric of our nation.ย ย Event will be held rain or shine.
