NEWBURG, Md. — Charles County is mourning the loss of Ronald J. “Ronnie” Wright, a retired Roads Superintendent and founding member of the Newburg Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department, whose death on June 28, 2025 marked the end of a decades-long legacy of public and community service.
Commissioner President Reuben B. Collins II ordered county flags to be flown at half-staff effective immediately, in Wright’s memory. They will remain lowered until sunset on the day of interment, which has not yet been scheduled.
Wright served 30 years in the Charles County Department of Public Works, beginning in 1989 as an equipment operator and retiring in 2019 as superintendent of the Roads Division. He was widely respected for his leadership and work ethic.
His service extended well beyond county operations. Wright was a founding member of the Newburg Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department, where he played a key role in shaping the department’s mission.
“Ronnie is credited with conceptualizing the need for an EMS department that was between Bel Alton and Cobb Island and has remained an active member of the corporation since its inception,” Newburg VRSFD wrote in an announcement. “His desire for emergency units to be placed in Newburg ultimately paved the foundation and path for everything that we have become today as a department.”
Over the years, Wright held several leadership positions within the organization, including President, Vice President, and Board Member.
The department noted that “Ronnie and the family’s wishes are for full fire department services and honors, but no arrangements have been made yet.” Service information will be shared once finalized.
In their statement, Newburg VRSFD encouraged the public to “keep Ronnie’s family, friends and our department in your thoughts and prayers as we all navigate the loss of such an amazing person that meant so much to so many throughout the entire county.”
