LA PLATA, Md. – Commissioner President Reuben B. Collins, II, Esq. ordered the Charles County flag to be lowered to half-staff effective immediately and returned to full-staff at sunset on Tuesday, February 4, 2025 to honor Mr. Leon Thornton.

On Tuesday, January 14, 2025, just a few weeks shy of his 91st birthday, the beloved founder of Thornton Funeral Home, P.A. Mr. Leon Thornton transitioned to glory while surrounded by his loving and devoted family.

In 1968, Thornton Funeral Home, P.A. was established by Mr. Thornton and his late wife, Margaret Thornton. The funeral home was initially operated from the Thornton’s actual residence, which housed their daughter Lydia, their son Leon, and their niece Tanja. As the family’s commitment to service and community grew, so did their business throughout the years. New chapels were built adjacent to their home, as well as a preparation room, family room, selection room, office space, and more. Service to meet the needs of the community maintained throughout everything.

The funeral home started as a family owned and operated business, and continues to operate as one today. The philosophy of Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., birthed through Mr. and Mrs. Thornton, also continues: “It is our purpose to give thoughtful service, and if in so doing we have helped to lighten your burden, our aim has been accomplished.”

As we feel the burden of his passing, we honor who the public knew as Mr. Thornton, but who we also know as “Daddy” “Uncle Thornton” and “Big Daddy”.  We will remember his legacy. We will remember his thoughtfulness to our family and our community. But most of all, we will remember how deeply he is loved.
