BRYANTOWN, Md. — Friends and family are rallying around the loved ones of a 22-year-old Port Tobacco man killed in a weekend crash in Bryantown, launching an online fundraiser to help cover funeral expenses.
On Nov. 22 at about 7:30 p.m., officers responded to the area of Olivers Shop Road and Edelen Drive for a report of a single-vehicle crash involving a red Honda Accord that left the roadway and struck a tree, authorities said.
When first responders arrived, they found the driver outside the vehicle. Firefighters began CPR, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.
He was later identified as Benjamin Thomas Mattingly, 22, of Port Tobacco. There were no passengers in the vehicle. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
In the aftermath of the crash, a GoFundMe campaign titled “In Memory of Ben – Support for Funeral Costs” was created to assist Mattingly’s family. As of Monday, the fundraiser had collected $1,275 from 15 donations toward a $10,000 goal.
“My name is Crystal. Brittany is one of my closest friends. I have watched both Ben and Jenna grow up. The pain this family is experiencing is unimaginable to me,” the organizer wrote on the fundraising page. “If you can help in any way for funeral expenses, it will be appreciated from the bottom of our hearts.”
Addressing the family directly, she added, “Brittany and Jenna – I love you and so do many others. Ben, my buddy, you will be deeply missed.”
